In the far North, in Vesterålen and Nordland, out towards the open sea, is the municipality of Andøy with its expanses of marshland and jagged peaks. The continental line is cutting close to
the land, resulting in the ability to see whales quite
close to the shore. The local community is mainly based
upon a military base and tourists going on whale
safari. With the escalation of the activities at the
Andøya Rocket Range, more and more scientists
are coming to work in Andøya. The last years
have also opened for a science centre and activities
related to the northern lights.
Andøya Rocket Range and the facilities
Andøya Rocket Range is situated in Oksebåsen,
a surrounding mountain range, 5 kilometres outside Andenes. Please note that Andøya Rocket Range is a
scientific, commercial and civil facility and has nothing
whatsoever to do with the military base also situated
in Andøya. The Rocket Range consists of the
scientific laboratories, the actual rocket range, main
buildings and a hotel facility. Also included in the
centre is the ALOMAR Lidar and several scientific measuring
units situated several kilometres away from the actual
centre.
All the students attending Space Camp will be staying
in double rooms in the hotel facility at the Rocket
Range. Each room has a separate bathroom with toilet
and shower. Sheets and towels are provided in the rooms.
Telephones are provided in all rooms at a self-cost
price. All meals are included, and will most often be
eaten in the "French Kitchen" in the main building.
Participants in need for a special diet are asked to
mention this in the application form. There will always
be available soft drinks and coffee/tea for the participants,
and often the smell of the famous waffles will fill
the main rooms! There will not be served any alcohol
during the camp, and the participants should be aware
that there is a strict rule prohibiting alcohol at the
Rocket Range.
The study facility houses an auditorium, smaller discussion
rooms and a computer lab with 15 computers and internet
connection. The main building provides a pool table,
solarium and sauna. TV sets are available throughout,
but the participants are encouraged to rather enjoy
the sun and each other's company! There is a piano and
guitar in one of the living rooms and the Team will
prepare a song book for the camp. |
